A rude awakening

At 5am this morning Jared and I were suddenly and loudly awakened by a loud bang and then the sound of breaking glass…in our bedroom. With no explanation the window that serves as our headboard simply shattered. It’s a double paned window but only the inside layer of glass broke; so it couldn’t have been some sort of impact from outside. We have no explanation for it. We’re just glad that neither Jared or I were hurt. Our heads were sleeping exactly underneath this window. To take these pictures I was standing on our bed.  The big black strips are duct tape that I put on it to keep the big piece from falling and making a big mess.

Bonnie - That is terribly scary!! So glad you two are unharmed.

Betsy King - What? So weird! So glad you are ok!

Jan - Yikes, glad you are ok.

Jen VH - Yikes! I’m glad you guys are okay.

Israel - There are two things which commonly cause something like that to happen –

One is if there’s force on the window from settling (foundation settling, wracking of exterior walls, etc);

The other is heat differences across the pane of glass – part of it expands when it’s hot and another part contracts because it’s cold. When that happens, the part in the middle shatters. It’s the same thing that happens when you put cold water in a pot or pan that’s been on the stove and makes it warp.
