I tried a recipe for lunch today that was delicious! The kids and gobbled until it was gone and then asked for more. It’s an interesting combo, but really fabulous.

One package frozen raw deveined shrimp (14 ounces)

1 tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp paprika

1 bay leaf

1/3 large seedless watermelon, diced

1 avacado

1/3 cup orange juice

1 Tbsp vinegar

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 tsp honey

Fill large sauce pan with water. Add salt, cinnamon, paprika, bay leaf and bring to a boil. When boiling add shrimp. Cook for a couple of minutes until shrimp is pink, but not over cooked. When pink and tender pour into a strainer and allow to cool.

Mix together orange juice, vinegar, olive oil, honey and a dash of cinnamon.

Dice watermelon and avocado. Add cooled shrimp (I was impatient and mine was still warm but it was just fine) and orange juice mixture. Gently fold together all ingredients. Serve immediately.

We ate it so fast that I didn’t even take a picture.

not the way your house should smell when you to return from vacation

We were gone for the past 9 days. We came home, put the kids to down for naps and Jared went out to wash the car and work out. I went into the basement to get something and noticed a nasty smell. I opened the freezer to find it full of rancid decaying meat. I’d just filled our freezer with a bunch of bison, organic chicken, and Jared’s Lean Cuisines that he takes for lunch. The freezer had clearly died early in our trip. It had had enough time to full thaw and grow extremely rancid. It STANK! On some pieces there was visible mold growth. blauck!! To add to my complaining, this is the second year in a row that we’ve had to trash the items in our freezer after our summer vacation. Last year it wasn’t the freezer’s fault.
Well, when things go wrong I just remind myself that I’m healthy and my kids are safely sleeping in their beds. I can handle the futility of paying and shopping for food, only to throw it away.

Wake up call

Last night Jared and I tucked the kids in the stroller for a nice long evening walk. We were walking on our quiet street about 5 houses down from ours when we saw a little boy, about 1 1/2 or 2-years-old. He dashed across the street right in front of a car. The driver slammed on her brakes, swerved her car and missed the little boy by less than 10 feet. It was a very, very close call. We were all stunned. He hadn’t been playing near the road. He dashed from behind a car on the driveway and into the road. The driver had no warning at all. Our street is little, not a a cul-de-sac, but the kind of street that I regularly do things like rummage through my purse for sunglasses while driving, etc… It was a wake up call for me. While I can usually get away with lazy driving, ever so occasionally things could go terribly wrong. Had she not been totally top of what she was doing that little boy would not be so lucky. She was on it. Thank you for not talking on your cell phone. Thank you for not putting your makeup. Thank you not rummaging in your purse. You should get an award for what did NOT happen.

My friends Matt and Heather just adopted a little boy! We are sooo super happy for them. I got to swing by and visit little Nathaniel on Saturday when he was exactly one week old. He is sweet, sleepy and snugly. Congrats!!!

Some sort of hidden inner devil is revealed whenever I’m the subject of flash photography.

I am the queen of red eye! I must have the most enormous retinas or something. I’m often the only one with glowing red eyes in group photos. If there is a flash on, my eyes are red, even of no one else’s is.

Last weekend we went to a fabulous fondue and white elephant party. 5 of the girls showed up in purple. Jared wore purple too, but I don’t think that he wanted to be in our purple picture ;-)

We’ve been at the cabin for about a week, relaxing and celebrating Harriet’s 2nd birthday. The weather wasn’t the best, kinda drizzly the whole time. But it was a nice getaway anyway. I really, really love that place. Jared and I often comment to each other that we need to get internet service there, then we remember that that is one of the reasons that we like it so much.

I read a really great parenting book, NutureShock. If you’re a kinda geeky parent it’s a must read. We worked a lot of puzzles, napped, and played with the kids. Harriet got another ice cream cake with dogs on it. I think that we have a little tradition going.

Eaters’ Guild

This summer we joined The Eaters’ Guild CSA. It’s been great to have so many fresh, in-season veggies in the house. A couple of weeks ago we went to the farm in Bangor for a potluck. It was a real trip. I can’t even begin to describe to you the coolness that was this place. It was so quaint. I felt like I’d entered a painting and was eating delicious food. I grabbed a couple of pix while we were there.

Melissa LaBarge has been one of my best friends since 1997. We’ve lived together, been mixed up by many people (including a doctor) and seen each other through so much of our lives. Labor Day weekend, Missy swapped her “Barge” for and “m” entered into a new life stage. She and Dan joined their lives together in a beautiful little ceremony overlooking the water. It was an absolutely fabulous wedding. Congrats Missy and Dan!

I was a little hesitant to accept the package from FedEx…
