This summer we said that we'd wait for a warm night in early winter to have some fun.  Since we're not too fond of keeping our kids up to 11:00pm to do fireworks in the dark we shot off a bunch in the daylight this summer.  It's fun but not near as much fun as the night time.  So we waited for fairly warm night in the winter when it gets dark so early.  Last week provided such an evening.  We invited the neighbors over and had a great time shooting off fireworks and doing sky lanterns.  I think that next year I'm going to stock up on some more fireworks in the summer.
